Julia Houghton
BMedSci, RCSLT, HCPC Speech and Language Therapist
Julia studied Human Communication Sciences at the University of Sheffield, graduating as a qualified Speech and Language Therapist in 2003. Her first band 5 post with East Wakefield PCT, gave her a broad amount of experience in a hospital setting, working with an adult neurology caseload across acute, rehabilitation and out-patient services. It was during this time, that she completed her post graduate dysphagia training, and also started to develop an interest in the field of voice disorders.
She moved to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2006, where she worked for a further 12 years as a band 6 then a band 7 SLT, specialising in voice disorders and brain injury rehabilitation. During her time at the in-patient neurorehabilitation ward, she worked as the lead SLT within the multi-disciplinary team, developing her knowledge and skills in all areas of communication and dysphagia therapy after brain injury. Julia is passionate about working as part of a team, delivering evidence based and client-centred rehabilitation, enabling service users to achieve their goals, and supporting families and carers.
Julia is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, and a member of The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Outside of work:
Julia loves being outdoors and spending time with her family and labrador. Having watched her son play cricket for many years, she has recently joined a women’s cricket league and is enjoying some team sport. Weekends often involve family bike rides, kayaking or trips away in the camper van.
